Systems Engineering is a document-based process to a large extent. These documents contain a lot of text as well as graphics, and these are not understood by tools, limiting the assistance these tools can provide to the Systems Engineering process.
Natural-Language Processing (NLP) is a set of techniques for analyzing text and extracting various kinds of information from it. These techniques vary in the types of information they provide, their accuracy, and their runtime complexity.
IBM Research-Haifa has been investigating various NLP techniques for engineering. After an introduction to NLP, Dr. Yishai Feldman will describe three recent activities.
The first is an attempt to formalize system requirements (see "A Cognitive Journey for Requirements Engineering", 26th Annual INCOSE International Symposium, 2016);
The second is a system that assists technicians in the diagnosis of faults;
The third is an intelligent conversational assistant for enterprises.
This effort is a Joint work with Boris Daich, Vladimir Lipets, Aviad Sela, Evgeny Shindin, Segev Wasserkrug, and Sergey Zeltyn (IBM Research–Haifa) and Michele Lora and Pierluigi Nuzzo (UC Berkeley).
